Models of State Ethical Neutrality in Selected Areas of Social Life

Abstrakt

Contemporary societies are increasingly pluralistic, even in terms of their values, ideals, and norms of behavior. What should the state and its institution’s attitude be toward citizens who have different and sometimes contradictory views on moral issues? One proposition is the principle of neutrality, particu- larly in the most controversial areas. This article outlines the characteristics of basic models of ethical neutrality and their practical application in specific areas of social life. A critical assessment of the consequences of introducing this principle sheds light on the need to search for a different definition of the state’s role in morality.

Biogram

REV. TADEUSZ ZADYKOWICZ, PhD, Hab, was born in 1968 and graduated from the Major Seminary of the Archdiocese of Białystok and the Catholic University of Lublin (KUL). He obtained his Habilitation of Theological Sciences degree with a specialization in moral theology. Since 2001, he has conducted research and teaches at KUL’s Institute of Moral Theology. He is currently a professor in the Department of Fundamen- tal Moral Theology and serves as the Director of the Institute of Moral Theology. Rev. Zadykowicz belongs to the following academic societies: the Scientific Society of KUL (2002-present), the Society for Moral The- ology (1999-present), the Scientific Society of Lublin (2003-present), the European Society for Catholic Theology (2004-present), and The Francis de Sales Scientific Society (2008-present). His primary research interests include the morality of religious life; the contemporary context of religious and moral life; the biblical and cultural premises of morality; the role of personal examples in the Christian moral life; the morality of researchers and conducting research.
